WASHINGTON -- The American Medical Association will not award an honor to Pfizer Inc. Monday for the company's controversial decision to promote erectile dysfunction drug Viagra to patients in New York. The decision by the National Medical Association to honor Pfizer's Viagra, a widely used drug for erectile dysfunction, is an endorsement for the drug from Pfizer.
"We are not saying that Viagra is a good drug for everyone," said Steven Nissen, medical director of the American Medical Association.
The statement, made by Pfizer's chairman, chairman, and chief executive officer, is based on a study of Viagra's effectiveness in treating impotence. A previous study showed Viagra could increase sexual desire.
The Viagra drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, has not disclosed the results of the study. The drug is approved for sale in about 1 million U. S. men.
